The Supplementary Picture Test was developed as a alternative parallel test to the original picture test.

The latter, which is provided as part of the basic Scheme, is often overused allowing the children to learn the test. The results of the test may therefore be out of line with children's normal functioning.

The original picture test is also sometimes used as teaching material. (not recommended) This can have a similar effect.

The Supplementary Picture Test covers similar objectives to the original test but uses different illustrations, and a different order of presentation. This allows a therapist to monitor progress without worrying about the child having been 'taught the test'. It also has a wider range of action pictures than the original test and some pictures at the upper end to elicit linked narratives.
